Most beginners ask: “What is angel names in Islam?” In typical Sunni scholarship, we verify what the Qur’an and authentic hadith show about the angels: their reality, function, and names explicitly disclosed. This book offers a simple, beginner-oriented introduction plus how USA & Canada online Qur’an courses help you learn to recite, understand key verses about angels, and build a strong practice at home.
“Believe in what has been revealed to him from his Lord…” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285, KFCNA)
“The angels and the Spirit descend by permission of their Lord…”
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:4, KFCNA)
“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation [tartīl].”
(Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4, KFCNA)
Fixed angel names are which?
Here are names and titles clearly based on the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. Where authorities differ, we say so briefly and respectfully.
Names in the Qur’an
Jibrīl [Gabriel] the angel of revelation. See Al-Baqarah 2:97–98 (“Whoever is an enemy to Jibrīl… Mikā’īl…”) and At-Taḥrīm 66:4.
Mikā’īl [Michael] mentioned with Jibrīl in 2:98.
Mālik the keeper of Hell, mentioned in Az-Zukhruf 43:77 (“O Mālik…”).
Hārūt & Mārūt angels who are mentioned in Al-Baqarah 2:102 in reference to a historic test.
Malak al-Mawt (Angel of Death) title in As-Sajdah 32:11; personal name ‘Azrā’īl is not used in the Qur’an or in sound hadith.
Kirāman Kātibīn (Noble Recorders) description/title in Al-Infiṭār 82:10–12; Raqīb and ‘Atīd are mentioned in Qāf 50:17–18 as watchers.
Names in authentic hadith
Isrāfīl named in a Sahih Muslim report in the first supplication: “O Allah, Lord of Jibrīl, Mikā’īl and Isrāfīl…” (Sahih grading). He is associated with the Trumpet at the end of time (the Qur’an refers to the Trumpet, e.g., Az-Zumar 39:68, without the mention of his name).
Munkar & Nakīr serious angels reported in hadith narratives accepted by the majority of Sunni academics (names not recorded in the Qur’an). There are some chains relegated to the hasan category; instruction of the grave questioning principle is typical.
Names not resolved in the Qur’an/Ṣaḥīḥ hadith
Riḍwān (Paradise guardian angel) is commonly known in subsequent accounts; not mentioned in the Qur’an.
Popular “angel color charts” going around on the internet usually mix weak reports with culture. Stick with the sources here for certainty.
Main principle: We establish what is not visible (al-ghayb) as Allah disclosed it added nothing. That makes religion strong and protects newbies from confusion.
What do angels do?
Revelation: Jibrīl brought the Qur’an to the Prophet ﷺ (2:97; Ash-Shu’arā’ 26:193 refers to the “Trustworthy Spirit”).
Mercy & management by Allah’s command: Mikā’īl is associated with provision and rain in the Sunnah.
Recording deeds: 82:10–12 and 50:17–18.
Taking the soul: 32:11 (title Malak al-Mawt).
Carrying the Throne: Al-Ḥāqqah 69:17.
Guardians: Ar-Ra’d 13:11 speaks of successive angels with each person by Allah’s command.
Learning these verses with tartīl helps you memorize names and functions properly.
Questions beginners have (swift, safe answers)
“How to observe angel names?”
Read Qur’anic verses above slowly, memorize pronunciation, and note context. Add the authentic hadith concerning Isrāfīl to provide insight into the Trumpet.
“How to perform Qur’an ‘revelation’ or ‘Qur’an science’?”
We don’t “perform” revelation. We recite and learn it with humility. “Qur’anic sciences” (ʿUlūm al-Qur’ān) are scholarly instruments canon of recitation, themes, reasons of revelation taught in a systematic, rather than ritual, manner.
“What about ‘Qur’anic numerology’?”
Traditional Sunni scholarship knows nothing of “numerology” as a way of discovering hidden meanings in figures. Focus on sound tafsīr, language, and authentic reports.
“Rules of supplications before sleeping?”
Establish a calming bedtime routine:
Recite Āyat al-Kursī (2:255) authentic hadith talks of protection during night.
Recite the later two verses of Al-Baqarah (2:285–286) “they will suffice him” (in Ṣaḥīḥ collections).
Recite Al-Ikhlāṣ, Al-Falaq, An-Nās (the Mu’awwidhāt), and recite simple adhkār.
Make it soft, routine, and explain the meanings step by step.
“Why is Sunnah of Friday important?”
The Qur’an directs the congregational prayer of Jumu’ah (62:9). Sunnah deeds involve extra salawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ and reading Surah Al-Kahf (as per authentic reports), done without straining oneself.
“Prophet stories (Ibrāhīm, Yūsuf, Mūsā, ‘Īsā)?”
Sīrah/Qur’an studies approach them respectfully and humbly, focus on character, patience, truthfulness, and trust in Allah age-appropriate and cross-madhhab neutral.
