Striving for Spiritual Excellence: Emulating the Ulil Albab in Islam and Their Divine Rewards
Not everyone stops to think deeply. Not everyone remembers Allah at every moment of the day. But those who do—those described in the Quran as Ulil Albab—live differently.
They don’t live louder. They live with more purpose. More clarity. More reflection.
At Ijaazah Academy, when we teach Quran, we also teach how to live by it. That’s why we focus on people like the Ulil Albab—because they show us what striving for excellence in faith actually looks like.
Let’s break it down in a way that feels real.
Who Are the Ulil Albab?

The phrase appears repeatedly in the Quran.
Ulil Albab means “people of understanding” or “people of sound minds.”
But it’s not just about intelligence. These are people who reflect, who remember Allah often, who act with sincerity and humility. They don’t just know—they understand. They apply what they know.
In Surah Al-Imran (3:190–191), Allah describes them clearly:
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and day are signs for those of understanding—who remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth…”
They think. They reflect. They remember. They act.
This is what spiritual excellence looks like.
What Makes Them Different?
They’re not perfect. But they’re intentional.
Here’s what they do consistently:
- They observe the world around them and connect it back to the Creator.
- They don’t compartmentalize faith—it runs through everything they do.
- They make dhikr in all situations—on their feet, at rest, even before sleep.
- They question, but in a way that leads them to stronger belief.
- They ask: “رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا” – “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly.”
They know life isn’t random. They live with that awareness every day.
Why Should We Try to Be Like Them?

Because Allah doesn’t just mention the Ulil Albab to describe them. He praises them. He invites us to follow their path.
Throughout the Quran, they are the ones who:
- Truly benefit from the Quran’s guidance
- Understand the wisdom behind the laws
- Are most likely to draw near to Allah
- Are promised specific rewards
Surah Az-Zumar (39:9) asks:
“Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only the people of understanding will take heed.”
The answer is clear. Knowing is not enough. Living with that knowledge—that’s where the difference is.
What Can We Do to Follow Their Example to be one of Ulil Albab in Islam?
You don’t need a perfect background. You don’t need to study 10 hours a day.
Start with small, steady actions. These five steps help build the mindset and lifestyle of Ulil Albab:
1. Make Reflection Part of Your Day

Pause and think. About the sky. About your blessings. About your responsibilities. Even two minutes of silent thought after prayer can shift how you see your day.
2. Remember Allah Frequently
Don’t limit dhikr to a checklist. Say SubhanAllah when you see something beautiful. Say Alhamdulillah when you finish a meal. Say Astaghfirullah when you feel off-track.
3. Read Quran with Thought
Even one verse a day, if read with meaning, builds depth. Focus on what it’s telling you. Ask, “How does this apply to me?”
At Ijaazah, many students start with just five verses a week. What they gain isn’t speed—it’s connection.
4. Surround Yourself with Good Influence
Join a class, a study circle, or even an online group. Being around people who reflect makes you reflect more. It’s quiet encouragement that builds habits.
5. Make Dua for Understanding
The Prophet ﷺ often said:
“اللهم فقهني في الدين”
(“O Allah, grant me understanding in religion.”)
Ask for insight. Ask for clarity. Then keep walking the path.
The Rewards Are Real
In Surah Ar-Ra’d (13:19–23), Allah ties the path of Ulil Albab to:
- Faith that lasts
- Consistent prayer
- Private and public charity
- Forgiveness
- Gardens of eternity
These aren’t just spiritual phrases. They are signs of a meaningful life now—and peace in the next.
Why Ijaazah Focuses on This
We don’t just teach the Quran. We help students live by it.
Whether it’s a child learning their first Surah, or an adult reconnecting with the Book after years, we encourage reflection and real application. That’s where the Quran becomes a part of you.
We remind our students that knowledge isn’t the goal. Wisdom is.
That’s the path of the Ulil Albab. And that’s the path we invite every student to walk.
Final Thought
You don’t have to be perfect to strive for spiritual excellence.
You just need to start. With quiet reflection. With sincere dhikr. With one verse at a time. And with the intention to understand, not just memorize.
That’s how the Ulil Albab live. And their rewards—both in this life and the next—are worth the effort.
